CHARLES S. HAIGHT, JR. is a graduate of Yale College in 1952 and Yale Law School in 1955. From 1955 to 1957 he served as a trial attorney in the Admiralty and Shipping Section of the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
From 1957 until 1976 he practiced maritime law at the New York firm of Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens, first as an associate and then as a partner. He appeared as an advocate in maritime commercial arbitration, and also acted as an arbitrator.
Following his nomination by President Ford, Judge Haight entered on service as a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York in 1976. He took senior status in 1995 but continues to try civil and criminal cases. On occasion he sits by designation on the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Judge Haight is a member of several bar associations. He has lectured and participated in seminars and conferences in this country and abroad, including delivering the second Cedric Barclay memorial lecture before the 11th International Conference of Maritime Arbitrators in Hong Kong in 1994.
